CitarBudgets used to be less than $100,000 per game and sometimes substantially less than that – sometimes $40,000 or less for a title. Now for a Triple A title, a solid music budget is $100,000 or above. Let me tell you what composers generally charge: it's around $1000 to $1500 per finished minute of music. So for a 60 minute score, say if the composer is charging $1000 which is a perfectly good rate all around and very common, then of course the score is $60,000. There are some exceptions to the $100,000 for a Triple A title – it's not always like that. There are two types of expenses in the music budget: there is the creative fee and the production budget. The creative fee is what goes to the composer and the production budget is very flexible depending on what the overall budget of the project is and how importantly they feel about achieving as great of a soundtrack as they possibly can. To record with a live orchestra of say 75 players costs around $5000 to $8000 per hour of recording in the studio or concert hall. So let's say its $8000 – you can record 3-5 minutes of finished music per hour of recording time. So, if you do the math it can take to do 60 minutes of recording at say 4 minutes per hour: 15 hours times $8000. That's something like $100,000 or $120,000. So that's a big deal – if a company is going to hire a symphony orchestra for 15 hours that is a Triple A title with a very high budget and with really high sales anticipated on a prestigious title. That's about the high water mark, when you're going into the studio for 15 or 16 hours.
